GENERAL QUESTIONS
What is Mentor Match?
It is an AAHPM tool - including a searchable database - that facilitates the establishment of mentoring relationships. It is user-driven, allowing registered Mentees to search among registered Mentors using specified criteria to find individuals whose experience and expertise match areas in which they wish to be mentored. Likewise, registered Mentors can search for and identify potential Mentees.
Do I need to be a member of AAHPM to participate as a Mentor or Mentee?
Yes. Both mentors and mentees must be members of AAHPM in order to enroll in the Mentor Match program.
Is there a fee associated with using Mentor Match?
No, there is no extra charge for using this resource. Mentor Match is an AAHPM member benefit.
Do I have to enroll by a certain date?
No, you can enroll in the program at any time.
Who are the Mentors?
Mentors are AAHPM members, who have volunteered their time and lend their expertise.
Who are the Mentees?
Mentees are members of AAHPM, seeking support and/or guidance.
Can I be a Mentor and a Mentee at the same time?
Yes, you can do so by enrolling and creating separate profiles under the Enroll as a Mentor and Enroll as a Mentee sections of the website.
How are Mentors and Mentees matched?
Members will first enroll as a mentor, mentee or both. While enrolling in the program, members will select preferences for various demographics to establish their personal criteria. Mentors will be matched with a mentee based on the search criteria selected by the mentee.
Are Mentors and Mentees required to meet in person?
No, they are not required to meet in-person. Meetings between mentors and mentees can be done in person, over the phone, Facetime/Skype or by email. It is up to the mentor and mentee to determine how they would like to communicate during their first call.
What is the best way to start the initial meeting between the Mentor and Mentee?
A good starting point is to discuss your individual backgrounds. It is up to the mentee to determine what type of mentoring guidance is needed and the goals of the relationship. Be sure to communicate these clearly during the initial interaction.
How long does the mentoring relationship last?
There are no time requirements or restrictions. Your initial interactions should include specifics as it relates to time and communication expectations. We highly recommend that during the first call, you discuss and agree upon how long it may take to accomplish the stated goals.
Is there any form of reporting a Mentor or Mentee is required to complete during the mentoring process?
Once the initial meeting has taken place and a mentoring period established, the mentor should update their profile to indicate an approximate date the mentoring relationship will end. This will help future mentees in determining a mentor's future availability. At the end of the mentoring period, both the mentor and mentee will be asked to complete an online evaluation. Both parties will update their profiles to indicate the mentoring relationship has been completed.
Can I get continuing education credit for participating in Mentor Match?
No, Mentor Match is not approved for continuing education credit.
FOR MENTORS
How do I become a Mentor?
If you are an AAHPM member, click here to Enroll as a Mentor. You will be instructed to select your preferences for various demographics and also to complete your member profile.
How does a Mentor get matched with a Mentee?
As a mentor, you will receive an email from potential mentees requesting mentorship. You will be prompted to accept or reject the request.
What if I don't feel comfortable selecting a listed Mentoring Topic because I feel it may be too broad? While my expertise may fit under that topic, I feel my knowledge is more specific.
If you are experiencing this dilemma, please select the Mentoring Topic that best fits your knowledge/expertise. We then recommend that you clarify your expertise to potential Mentees in your Mentor Match profile bio.
Is it okay to reject a request?
Yes, but there should be a good reason to do so. We encourage you to at least have an initial conversation to explore whether or not the relationship would be mutually fulfilling. If a potential mentee has misinterpreted information in your profile, you may find him/her to be an inappropriate match.
Who makes the first initial contact to begin the mentoring relationship?
If the mentor accepts the invitation, the mentee information will be provided to them. It is up to the mentor to make the initial contact with the mentee within one to two weeks of the match. AAHPM staff will not be responsible for facilitating the connection between the mentor and mentee.
Are there any resources available to help the Mentor determine what to discuss in the first call?
Yes, there is a Discovery Call Outline provided on the Enroll as a Mentor page under the Mentoring Tools section.
Can a Mentor have more than one Mentee?
Mentors may have up to two mentee relationships at a time. We do recommend that you be judicious in accepting mentees who you believe to be best suited to learn your expertise and experience, that you are able to adequately meet the needs of each mentee and give the same time and dedication to each of them as well.
How do I end the mentoring relationship?
If the mentoring relationship is complete, go to the 'My Mentoring Relationship' on your AAHPM profile and mark the relationship as completed.
What if I'm going to be on vacation or unavailable for an extended period of time?
Go to the Enroll as a Mentor page, scroll down to 'Mentor Status' then click on the switch labeled 'Temporarily Not Participating.' Doing this will indicate that you are not accepting any mentee request at this time. While that switch is turned on, your mentoring profile will not be included in a mentee's search for a mentor. It is your responsibility to communicate your availability to your existing mentees. When your schedule permits, you will have to update your profile to indicate that you are now available to accept mentees again.
How do I delete my Mentor profile?
Unfortunately, you cannot permanently delete your mentor profile. However, if you no longer want to participate in Mentor Match, on the Enroll as a Mentor page, scroll down to the start and end date of availability section. Change the end date so that it is past the current date, so that the time has lapsed.
Is there any source of recognition for serving as a Mentor?
Yes, as an active program participant, you will receive a digital badge on your AAHPM member profile, identifying you as a Mentor.
